According to the crime statistics reported by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) through the Uniform Crime Reporting Program (UCR), the most popular crime committed in Lowndes County is Burglary. The statistics show that in 3 years, Lowndes county reported a total of 1,924 arrests. The county’s arrest rate at 1,109.25 per 100,000 residents was 20.42% higher than the national average of 921.6 per 100,000 people.

The county is also said to have a higher rate of non-violent crimes than violent ones. It recorded 608 non-violent crimes and 58 violent crimes. In Mississipi, the sex offender registry is maintained by the Mississippi Department of Public Safety(MDPS). Visitors at the facility must know and do the following;

  • Have a valid photo identification such as; valid photo driver’s license, valid state-issued photo ID, passport, valid immigration card, current military ID card.
  • Minors must be in the company of identified and approved adults during visits
  • Only 2 visitors are allowed at a time
  • Visits last 15 minutes
  • Visitors must be searched before being allowed access to the detention center. If the visitor refuses, access may be denied.
  • Visitors must adhere to the dress code and dress decently at all times. No nudity or improper exposure of body parts will be tolerated.

Lowndes County Vital Records

Mississippi vital records are managed by the Mississippi Department of Health, Vital Records Office which also handles health statistics for the state. The vital records managed include birth, death, marriage, and divorce records.

Birth and death records are available from November 1912 to the present.

  • Marriage records are available from January 1, 1926, to present

Marriage records are also managed by the Mississippi Department of Health, Vital Records Office and are not considered public records by the state and can only be accessed by people that show tangible interest.

By using this marriage record application on their website, the department can provide inquirers with certificates or copies of marriages that took place between January 1, 1926, to June 30, 1938, and for January 1, 1942. Records from July 1, 1938, to December 31, 1941, are available through the Lowndes Circuit Court Clerk in the county provided that’s where the license was issued.

Divorce records are not maintained by the State’s department of health, but the Lowndes County Chancery Court where the divorce was finalized.

The obtainable records are from 1859 when divorce records and proceedings were officially filed in the county. Prior to 1859, divorce records were introduced as private bills and recorded in books that can be found at the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
