Crime Numbers
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety partners with the Federal Bureau of Information (FBI) and the National Criminal Information Center (NCIC) to provide criminal information and crime numbers in the state to members of the general public. In 2017, Madison County recorded 11 violent crimes, 0 murder or nonnegligent manslaughter, 1 rape, 1 robbery, 9 aggravated assaults, 251 property crimes, 13 burglaries, 231 larcenies, 7 motor vehicle thefts, and 0 arson.
Compared to the crime figures for 2013, the county recorded a increase in rape (100%), property crime (54%), burglary (30%), larceny (53%), and motor vehicle theft (250%). There was a decrease in violent crimes (31%), robbery (50%), and aggravated assaults (36%). Murder and arson rates remained the same.
Criminal Records
The Mississippi Department of Public Safety Criminal Information Center is responsible for conducting name and fingerprint-based criminal history checks for all counties in the state. These checks are available to clear residents of the state for employment purposes. Criminal history record checks may contain misdemeanor and felony convictions, deferred judgments, and reports from circuit courts and justice courts.
The Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) has a dedicated Criminal History Record Check Division that handles criminal history checks for employment into MSDH-licensed healthcare and child care establishments. An applicant can request a criminal history record check through livescan, by mail, or in person.
The requester should complete the fingerprinting information form. The MSDH charges a processing fee of $50 for each criminal history record check, which is payable through money order, cashier’s check, or business check. The Mississippi Sex Offenders Registry is an online database where members of the general public can search for registered sex offenders in Mississippi. Searches can be done using the sex offender’s name, address, or ZIP code.
The Madison County Detention Center is one the primary jail in the county. The jail is open to visitations from Monday to Friday. However, visitation is organized by cell blocks. A visitor seeking to see any of the inmates would have to visit in advance to ascertain the exact cell block the inmate is kept in and the visitation day of the cell block.
On the said day of visitation, the visitor must be present and pre-registered before the scheduled time of visitation for the particular cell block. Visitations are not allowed during holidays. The county also maintains an updated list of inmates, which is available to the general public. The list contains the inmate’s name, date of birth, arrest date and time, arresting agency, and charges.

Court records
Madison County has one Circuit Court, one Chancery Court, one County Court, one Youth Court, one Justice Court, and six Municipal Courts. The Circuit Court has jurisdiction over all criminal and civil matters in the county. This does not include cases that are exclusively vested in other courts.
The Madison County Circuit Clerk maintains all the court records for the County Court, Circuit Court, and Youth Court. On the other hand, the Chancery Clerk’s Office maintains all the Chancery Court records.
The Madison County Chancery Clerk also maintains an array of court records that are open to members of the general public. Vital Records
The Chancery Clerk’s office maintains all divorce records that were finalized in Madison County. To obtain a divorce record, contact the Chancery Clerk’s office by mail, phone, or in person.
The Mississippi Vital Records Office maintains and issues marriage certificates for marriages that were contracted in all counties of the state, including Madison County. The available marriage records are for marriages contracted between January 1, 1926, to June 30, 1938, and January 1, 1942, to date.
It is possible to obtain marriage certificates by mail, phone, or in person. To order a certified copy of a Madison County marriage certificate via mail, complete the Application for Certified Mississippi Statistical Record of Marriage.
